The Saengerbund:
A 150 Year History of the German Club in Delaware
by Hilde Cox and Trudy E. Gilgenast
Wilmington, Delaware's Saengerbund, originally an all-male German singing society, recently celebrated the 150th anniversary.
German immigration to America, including the Wilmington area, peaked in the mid-to late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, America's relationship with Germany underwent dramatic swings from bitter enmity to close friendship.
Through it all, the Saengerbund has endured and thrived and retains an important role in the local community, both for those who have a German heritage, and those who do not.
