Pennsylvania German Broadsides:
Reflection of Daily Life 1741 - 1890
by Trudy E. Gilgenast
What is a broadside? Professor Trudy Gilgenast unravels the experiences of the Pennsylvania Germans from 1741-1890 through her translations of these one-sided sheets of paper printed in the German language. She garnered over 2,000 copies which reveal a unique story of the daily lives of early German immigrants. Information is gleaned about political announcements, sales, cures, advertisements, celebrations, religion as well as contemporary and captivating headlines.
Since broadsides were cheap or distributed gratis, they were readily disposable. Thus, those preserved in museums and libraries offer a glimpse into a rarely observed aspect of our history. This book offers a balanced selection of imprints, further enriches the fascinating field of broadsides, and presents translations of imprints which have been inaccessible to the non-reader of the German language.
