Green Wood Properties Influencing Tree Selection for Basket Making
by Tom Dueber
Green Wood Properties Influencing Tree Selection for Basket Making is a systematic study of 180 different wood samples to assess how well these would work for Shaker-style basket making. A classification scheme was developed to record the results and comparisons. Baskets were made from sixteen different kinds of trees. A detailed description for the steps to prepare a basket of a set design is illustrated. Photographs of splints of most of the wood samples are shown indicating what grain patterns and colors baskets of these woods would look like.
